MINNEAPOLIS - The Twins on Tuesday made their first coaching hire to begin the rebuild of their hitting group, bringing back Baltimore hitting coach Matt Borgschulte to serve in the same role on manager Rocco Baldelli’s 2025 staff.
The 33-year-old Borgschulte and the Twins have plenty of familiarity with each other, as he previously spent four years as a Minor League hitting coach in the Minnesota system from 2018-21 -- most recently serving as hitting coach for Triple-A St. Paul in ‘21 -- before he was hired away by the Orioles to join their Major League staff.
Borgschulte attended Parkway West High School and played for the South-West Stars in SLABA and was the 2007 SLABA team MVP for the Stars. Borgschulte began his college career at Western Kentucky, but transferred to Division II Drury University, where he became their first All-American. He coached at Southeast Missouri State University and in the Twins organization, then was the Co-Hitting Coach of the Baltimore Orioles.
BALTIMORE - A familiar face will be taking over the reins of the Orioles’ offensive staff in 2025. Former SLABA player Cody Asche was added as the Orioles hitting coach to replace Matt Borgschulte.
Asche, who served as the team’s offensive strategist for 2023 and 2024 was the upper-level hitting coordinator in 2022, played in parts of five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox from 2013-2017.
He played high school ball at Ft. Zumwalt West and for American National West in SLABA. He went on to play for the University of Nebraska in 2009-2011 before being drafted by the Phillies in 2011.
